Form + Function = Fun

One of the defining characteristics of 21st century design is the search for solutions that fuse diverse inspirations and styles together. While the 20th century, in design terms, was defined largely by the function vs ornament debate, today's leading-edge practitioners no longer view the two as mutually exclusive, exploring instead a pluralistic, open-minded and, dare we say, often more playful, path.

Nowhere is this spirit more clearly evident than in the work of rising design star Julia Hederus, and in particular in this new, limited edition footwear collection Hederus has produced in collaboration with K-Swiss.

as with all successful collaborations, the partnership itself is a natural one. working on Her MA collection at Central St. Martin's, Hederus, orginally from Sweden, found herself being inspired by K-Swiss-wearing Hackney youth, and the unique stylistic twists they brought to their outfits. Hederus approached the brand who, recognising her potential and a kindred design spirit, worked with her to produce footwear for her ma collection that perfectly complemented her menswear apparel, and formed the precursor to the inspired, forward-looking designs you see here.

Hederus's work has already drawn favourable comparisons with the "clean and clever" approach of belgian menswear futurists, whilst her minimal yet subtly playful approach also carries distinct echoes of the Japanese school.
